For the third consecutive year, sixth-grade students of The King’s Academy competed in Odyssey of the Mind. Jean Albert and Carolyn Slade had a team of 7 sixth graders who worked for several months after school to come up with a creative solution to a long-term problem called “Food Court”. This year they competed in Division II, which is composed of 6th – 8th graders.
“We were very proud of our team. They ended up in second place in a division that had 10 teams competing. They received the highest score in their long-term problem solution but were topped by other teams in their spontaneous problem solving, giving them 2nd place,” Slade said.
The team members were as follows: Cierra Addie, Angelena Fernandez, Emily Haine, Blaize Lowe, Celene Perez, Hannah Tumulty, and David Williams.
Odyssey of the Mind is great for the kids as it teaches students to learn creative problem-solving methods while having fun in the process. For more than twenty-five years, this unique program has helped teachers generate excitement in their students. By tapping into creativity, and through encouraging imaginative paths to problem solving, students learn skills that will provide them with the ability to solve problems — great and small — for a lifetime.
