TKA Opens International ProgramThe King’s Academy is pleased to announce the establishment of an International Program which will introduce its first students into our student body for the 2012-13 school year.  TKA anticipates ten students from China, eight boys and two girls, will enroll in the fall and will be integrated directly into mainstream classes.  These students will be seeking to complete their remaining high school years at King’s and go on to attend college in the United States. The King’s Academy has partnered with The Cambridge Institute of International Education to identify strong candidates and offer their expertise and comprehensive services in our student acceptance process.  The students who attend The King’s Academy will be fully vetted and will even undergo a face-to-face interview process with personnel from the admissions office, secondary administration and the Headmaster via Skype.

It is King’s desire for the International Program to bring cross-cultural cooperation and cultural diversity as international students are given the opportunity to excel academically in our exceptional college preparatory program and as they develop lasting friendships with their American counterparts.  Current TKA students will benefit from the International Program as they gain greater appreciation and awareness of global cultures.  Students will be housed with families of current TKA students who understand the King’s philosophy and will provide warmth and support not found in traditional boarding programs.

In the future, The King’s Academy looks forward to hosting students from other countries around the globe.  King’s is grateful for this opportunity to open their doors to the international community.

The King’s Academy K4 Students Enjoy Butterfly Release

Category : palm beach private school, private schools palm beach, the king's academy

A sure sign of spring at The King’s Academy is the annual release of the painted lady butterflies by the school’s K4 class.  This year the rite took on added significance for the four-year olds and their teacher, Linda Shaw.  In October, Mrs. Shaw was diagnosed with stage 3B breast cancer and given a 50% chance of survival.  While the students watched the journey of each butterfly from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis and finally to butterfly, they also journeyed with Mrs. Shaw through chemotherapy and surgery.  “It never occurred to me to stop teaching through this process,” said Mrs. Shaw.  “Teaching is my passion and these children were the best therapy anyone could have.”  The students agreed.  “Is your hair falling out?” one four-year old asked every day.  Another took a more practical approach; “I like my teacher’s hat.  Every day, it matches her clothes.”

The class had nurtured the butterflies throughout their lifecycle and took great pride in the fact that they had prepared them for their moment of freedom. On the morning of the release, they could barely contain their excitement as Mrs. Shaw unzipped the cage, releasing the butterflies. The students jumped up and ran after them, watching and cheering them on as they flew away. Several students shared the same sentiments as Ruby Callahan who said, “I love butterflies.  I wish we could keep all of them!”  A few butterflies perched on the fingers of some of the students as if saying farewell before departing.

The experience of raising butterflies is something the students will never forget.  These types of hands-on learning experiences give King’s students an understanding and appreciation for science.  They learned about the life cycle of the butterfly and were able to watch the entire process.  Each stage of butterfly development brought new wonderment to the students.  They witnessed how the eggs changed color before hatching, observed typical caterpillar behaviors, and marveled as the caterpillars transformed into beautiful butterflies.  This tremendous experience was heightened by their involvement in their teacher’s parallel process of change and renewal, making it all the more sweet and memorable.  Just as the butterflies emerged from their chrysalises and glided freely into the sky, Mrs. Shaw’s chemotherapy treatment has been completed, the cancer is gone, and her prognosis is excellent.  It is spring.  Life is new again.

TKAP Celebrates Easter

Category : palm beach private school, private schools palm beach, the king's academy

tkap-rbp3At the Royal Palm Campus celebrated the Easter Season by going on an egg hunt, nibbling on flavorful snacks and playing festive games. The teachers retold the gospel stories of Jesus’s life and death through the use of Resurrection Eggs. Each plastic egg contained an object that helped to tell a part of the story. The children enjoyed learning the great love of God and gift of His only Son, Jesus, whose life and death saved us!

tkap greenacres

To teach the gospel stories of Jesus’s life and death, the Greenacres campus made The Word come to life. The little ones went on a “pilgrimage” that took them from Jesus as a baby, to Palm Sunday, to the Garden of Gethsemane, to the cross and finally to the empty tomb. At each station, they heard the story and sang songs to help them further understand God’s great love for us in sending his Son, Jesus to save us from our sins.
