Last Season Record: 13 – 12 – 1 Runner-up in District

The theme for the lady lions this year is, One Team, One Spirit, One Goal – Can’t lose. “That they may be one as We are One.” John 17:21

The team is looking forward to a great season under third year varsity coach Tim Willcox. Last year the team made important strides by becoming runner up in the district and going to a regional playoff game. The girls have put in a full year of hard work and are constantly getting one step closer to becoming the district champion and a run at state. Although the team will miss the leadership and ability of longtime softball player Brooke McCleod, this young team is poised for future greatness.

The lions will be led by senior Pitcher Aubree Murphy and veteran infielder and catcher Kim Valdes. Their leadership combined with the determination of middle infielders Amanda Willcox and Kristen Wright is sure to make for a solid offensive and defensive presence. After a year away, sophomore Abby Cornelius will return to anchor down first base. In the outfield we have third year varsity starters Allison Willcox and Sarah Kincaid who are true hustlers whenever the ball gets to the grass.

TKA has an abundance of young second year varsity starters. Becca Gomez will continue her excellent play at catcher and last year hit a rare out of the park home run as an eighth grader . Becky Gaidosh brings a big bat and a diverse ability to play three positions. Caytlyn Rolston will add another quality arm to our pitching staff and can play on the clay or the grass. Rounding out the team is Rena Patel, Sam Chaison, Naomi Cortez, and Monique Belanger who will add depth and versatility to the lineup.

The outlook for the 2012 softball season is very promising. All the hard work of the coaches and players is sure to pay off in a big way.

The Camille La Vie dress came from Group USA at Sawgrass Mills. It’s full-length and strapless, predominantly white with strips of material with a gold-and-black design on the sides. The top is beaded and gold, giving it a flair of ancient Egypt.

Jamie Clement loved it enough to wear it to The King’s Academy prom in May. Seventeen magazine loved it enough to name her the winner of its “Show Us Your Prom Style Contest.”

“They said they liked my dress the best, and they also liked the way I looked,” said Clement, who traveled to New York to do a photo shoot for the magazine’s March issue. “I was on the phone crying. I was freaking out.”

The trip and the photo shoot – images of which also will be seen in the Camille La Vie and Group USA catalogs online – capped what began as a lovely evening for Clement, then a junior at the private school near Wellington.

“It was the first time I had gone to a formal dance, as our school doesn’t have homecoming dances,” Clement said. “All of my friends went, and we took a limousine. We had a nice dinner, and it was a whole lot of fun.”

After the prom, Jamie’s mom, Laurie, submitted her photo to the contest. The phone call came in mid-November and the all-expense-paid trip to New York quickly after that. Her prize included two nights at a hip hotel, a $1,000 shopping spree and a tour of Seventeen’s offices.

“I had wanted to go to New York before Christmas and then this came along,” Clement said. “We got to see the Rockettes at Radio City and walked around the city for 12 hours one day.”

It added to what has been a busy senior year for Clement, who is co-captain of her school’s varsity cheerleading squad, which has won state titles the last two years, took second at nationals last year and hopes to win championships at both competitions this year.

Clement said all her friends are eagerly awaiting the magazine’s arrival.

“They want to see my photos,” she said, “and they want my autograph.”

Who are your heroes?

‘My parents and my grandma. They have always been there for me and are great role models.’

What’s your favorite subject at school?

‘I’d have to say science. I think it’s most interesting and I can apply it to my life. I’m going to be a surgeon, studying next year as a pre-med at the University of Alabama. I really have enjoyed my human physiology and biology classes.’

What is your favorite book?

‘The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. It’s not just a normal book about average people. Everyone is stronger than the lead character, but she has the strongest will to win.’

What do you like best about attending The King’s Academy?

‘Attending a religious-based school, the students have a righteous way about them. They help keep you going in the right direction instead of leading you down the wrong path.’

What historical event would you have liked to have been present at?

‘The crucifixion of Jesus. I would have liked to have been an eyewitness to tell that story.’

TKAC Students donned various shades of pink shirts, socks, shoes and other accessories to rally support for a local toddler who is battling cancer on Monday, October 17. “Our students have been praying for several people throughout the school year concerning their cancer treatments, but there is one in particular that we would like to support this year,” explained Mr. Sentgeorge.

One-and-a-half- year-old Hannah Kate Johns is currently being treated for leukemia. It was a personal effort for TKAC’s students since many are former students of Hannah Kate’s grandmother, Cheryl Stein. Ms. Stein is a beloved Clewiston middle school teacher and friend of the TKAC community. Hannah Kate, who lives with her family in nearby Belle Glade, has been undergoing treatment for her leukemia at St. Jude’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.

Students shared their ideas of how to honor the Johns family. “After presenting the plan for Pink Day to the students, they asked if they could collect money and make a donation,” said Mr. Sentgeorge. In addition to wearing pink and praying for the Johns family, students collected $70, which will be donated to St. Jude’s Hospital in Hannah Kate’s name.

The best times were run by Sophomore Dakodah Davis (32:34) and 7th grade student Aubrey Lee (33:39).

The team redeemed themselves at their meet on September 22, which also took place at Lake Placid High School. Coach Sanchez explains, “They shaved major minutes off their previous times. I was so proud of their effort.” Middle school students Dylan Kurtz (27:34) and Aubrey Lee (28:56) had the team’s shortest times.

Coach Sanchez commends her team, most of who train and compete in more than one sport. She adds, “I’m really impressed with their commitment to their schoolwork, their coaches, their teammates and most of all their work for our Lord. They take it to the finish line.”

TKAC’s next cross country meet is at Labelle High School on September 27 at 4:30 p.m.

The boys of fall returned to the field this past Friday night at Kahlert Stadium and began their season with a dominating performance. Facing 7A Royal Palm Beach High School, the Lions rolled over the Wildcats with an emphatic 46-32 win. This season’s team is low on numbers dressing only 29 players, but what it lacks in numbers it makes up for in heart. Head Coach Craig Dobson will rely on many players to go both ways to ensure the Lions have another shot at a district title and a state playoff run.

The summer was a busy one for the Lions who attended FAU Linemen camp and also spent the summer in the weight room getting stronger. Fall camp opened with 3 days of grueling practices in Lake Placid. On offense the team features a strong and powerful offensive line surrounded by many experienced skill position players. Senior tailback Brian Grove will be a feature of the offense after racking up over 200 yards of total offense in the pre-season game against Royal Palm. Also, seniors Kevin Stypulkowski and Chris Machiela anchor the receiving corps and senior Zack Lowe adds all around speed and pass catching ability to this well rounded offense.

The defense is anchored by a strong group on the line including senior DJ Vannelli and junior Kaelen Crowley along with a cast that also plays on the offensive line. The linebacking corps is also a strength with senior Zack Fraga patrolling the middle and Lee Wilkinson on the outside. Coach Dobson believes the strength of this defense is in the defensive backfield where junior Marcus Houston and seniors Chris Machiela and JC Charles line up at corners and safety.

The Lions once again have high hopes of a district championship in a newly configurated district 7-3A which includes newcomers Pahokee and Cardinal Newman as well as traditional rivals American Heritage and Benjamin. Senior Zack Lowe sums up the teams expectations of 2011 by saying, ”We have been working our tails off since last season’s playoffs, and we are going to compete in every game to get back there this year.” This Friday the lions will travel to Tallahassee to face North Florida Christian in their 2011 season opener.

The King’s Academy Senior Kimberly Jaar will be attending Florida Atlantic University’s School of Architecture Summer Institute. The two-week Summer Institute will be held on the FAU Boca Raton Campus in July. Kimberly is one of only 12 students selected to participate in this prestigious program. During her studies, she will produce a variety of work that can be used as part of her portfolio to present to colleges as she is applying this upcoming year. Kimberly will also have the opportunity to display and participate in a final critique of her work.

Kimberly notes that her participation in the Job Shadowing Day at The King’s Academy last year provided her with a focused look at an architectural firm and solidified her choice to pursue architecture as a career. She is excited about FAU’s Summer Institute because “this will be the first hands-on experience” she will have working in her chosen career field. She is looking forward to the individual projects, studio time, and weekly field trips to visit local architects and the Fort Lauderdale campus where FAU’s upper division architecture program is located. Kimberly plans to attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, following graduation from TKA.

Secondary Principal, Sonya Jones, stated, “I am so proud of our TKA students who attend summer enrichment programs. Taking time out of their summer to further their education is a common desire among our students, and this really contributes to their admittance into the top universities and colleges in the United States, as well as abroad. Having these types of opportunities is a testament to the quality of students that attend The King’s Academy and the work ethic that each student possesses.”

The King’s Academy is a nationally recognized private Christian school serving approximately 1,200 students from preschool through twelfth grade and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the Association of Christian Schools International, and the Florida Association of Christian Colleges and Schools.
