The King’s Academy Choir Students Take A Bite Out Of ‘The Big Apple’

Category : Uncategorized

New York City is known for its fabulous production of Broadway shows and musicals. Aside from the enjoyment of this entertainment, observing these professionals proves to be a beneficial activity for aspiring musical theatre students.

The King’s Academy’s high school choirs and dance troupes recently returned from a four-day fine arts trip to New York City.  Jacquie Lopez, Dance Instructor, explained the purpose of the trip, “We believe that an important component of fine arts instruction is real world experience.  New York City is home to our nation’s best theater talent, so our students get to see the level of vocal, acting, and dance excellence that is possible.”

Highlights of the trip included a concert performance by The King’s Academy’s choirs at St. John the Divine Church, the largest cathedral in the world, as well as choir and dance classroom workshops taught by Broadway professionals.

Students also toured Lincoln Center having a chance to observe a combined rehearsal by The New York Philharmonic Orchestra, The Metropolitan Opera, and The New York City Ballet.  The group also took in two Broadway performances, “In the Heights” and “Mary Poppins.”  Nick Savarese, TKA Senior and a professional stage veteran at Jupiter’s Maltz Theatre, was particularly fond of the trip, as he has been invited to enroll in New York University’s theatre program in the fall. “Training in New York City is one of the best ways to try to break into the business,” he said.

In addition to fine arts instruction, students also took time to see the sights including:  Rockefeller Center, Greenwich Village, Times Square, the new World Trade Center construction, and the Statue of Liberty via the Staten Island Ferry.  Due to recent winter storms, students were also able to participate in a faculty vs. students snowball fight in Central Park.

Distinguished Children’s Book Author Skype’s With The King’s Academy ‘Cubs’

Category : Uncategorized

On March 11, 2010, Suzanne Buckingham Slade will be visiting the kids in K-2nd grade at The King’s Academy via Skype (a sensational internet phone and video chat system).

Suzanne is the author of over 70 children’s books. Her works include picture books, biographies, as well as titles about animals, sports, and nature.

Ms. Slade holds a Mechanical Engineering degree and worked in the engineering field several years before starting her writing career. She lives near Chicago with her husband, Mike, and two children, Christina and Patrick. Ms. Slade spends most days doing what she loves – dreaming up new story ideas, reading new children’s books, researching, and best of all – writing!

Ms. Slade will be sharing her most recent book “What’s New at the Zoo?” with kids. This in-depth class visit includes a summary of Slade’s journey – a story of persistence that began with many rejection letters (you’ll see her stack!) – and a reading of her latest picture book. She will also share the fascinating way an idea becomes a book, along with an extensive Q & A session.

The King’s Academy presents Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “Cinderella”

Category : Uncategorized

April 23, 24, 30, & May 1 at 7:30 pmand April 24 & May 1 at 1:30 pm

The “Award Winning” students and faculty of The King’s Academy Vocal Arts Department team up with Rodgers & Hammerstein’s smash Broadway and cinematic hit, CINDERELLA, to offer you an evening’s entertainment you won’t want to miss! The timeless enchantment of this magical fairy tale is reborn with the Rodgers & Hammerstein hallmarks of originality, charm and elegance. Originally presented on television in 1957 starring Julie Andrews, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s CINDERELLA was the most widely viewed program in the history of the medium. Its recreation in 1965 starring Lesley Ann Warren was no less successful. It transported a new generation to the miraculous kingdom of dreams-come-true, as did a second remake in 1997. This Enchanted Edition is based on the 1997 teleplay which starred Brandy as Cinderella and Whitney Houston as her Fairy Godmother.

The King’s Academy Fine Arts Department has a long history of professional theatrical productions that leaves audiences coming back year after year. Our production of CINDERELLA features Kelley McGillicuddy (First Prize winner in the Watch a Rising Star Competetion), as Cinderella, and Nicholas Savarese, as the Prince, both whom have appeared in professional productions at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre. Nick will be attending New York University next fall as a Vocal Performance/Music Theatre major. Don’t miss this outstanding evening of entertainment that the whole family is sure to enjoy!! Ticket prices are $15.00 for center seating and $12.00 for reserved seating.  Reserved tickets can be ordered online at www.TKA.net or by calling (561) 686-4244, extension 353.  The King’s Academy is located at 8401 Belvedere Road, West Palm Beach.
