2011 TKA Football Preview

The boys of fall returned to the field this past Friday night at Kahlert Stadium and began their season with a dominating performance.  Facing 7A Royal Palm Beach High School, the Lions rolled over the Wildcats with an emphatic 46-32 win.  This season’s team is low on numbers dressing only 29 players, but what it lacks in numbers it makes up for in heart.  Head Coach Craig Dobson will rely on many players to go both ways to ensure the Lions have another shot at a district title and a state playoff run.

The summer was a busy one for the Lions who attended FAU Linemen camp and also spent the summer in the weight room getting stronger.  Fall camp opened with 3 days of grueling practices in Lake Placid.  On offense the team features a strong and powerful offensive line surrounded by many experienced skill position players.  Senior tailback Brian Grove will be a feature of the offense after racking up over 200 yards of total offense in the pre-season game against Royal Palm.  Also, seniors Kevin Stypulkowski and Chris Machiela anchor the receiving corps and senior Zack Lowe adds all around speed and pass catching ability to this well rounded offense.

The defense is anchored by a strong group on the line including senior DJ Vannelli and junior Kaelen Crowley along with a cast that also plays on the offensive line.  The linebacking corps is also a strength with senior Zack Fraga patrolling the middle and Lee Wilkinson on the outside.  Coach Dobson believes the strength of this defense is in the defensive backfield where junior Marcus Houston and seniors Chris Machiela and JC Charles line up at corners and safety.

The Lions once again have high hopes of a district championship in a newly configurated district 7-3A which includes newcomers Pahokee and Cardinal Newman as well as traditional rivals American Heritage and Benjamin.  Senior Zack Lowe sums up the teams expectations of 2011 by saying, ”We have been working our tails off since last season’s playoffs, and we are going to compete in every game to get back there this year.”  This Friday the lions will travel to Tallahassee to face North Florida Christian in their 2011 season opener.

TKA Juniors to Attend The Grosfeld Family ADL National Youth Leadership Mission

Category : Uncategorized

Zoe 2010-2011 yearbookThe King’s Academy juniors Zoe Andarsio and Michael Habib have been selected to attend The Grosfeld Family Anti-Defamation League (ADL) National Youth Leadership Mission in Washington D.C. on November 13-16.   The ADL, who champions civil rights and human relations, fights anti-Semitism and all forms of bigotry, defends democratic ideals and protects civil rights for all.  To this end, the ADL initiated the Grosfeld Family ADL National Youth Leadership Mission to offer an effective way for America’s youth to apply the lessons of the Holocaust to modern-day issues of bigotry.  Zoe and Michael will be a part of a culturally and religiously diverse group of high school juniors selected to participate because of their leadership potential, demonstrated interest in Holocaust education as well as diversity, and ability to share the messages of the Mission with others.  Activities in Washington D.C. will include participating in ADL’s A World of Difference Institute activities, touring the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, and attending meetings with community leaders including government officials, civil rights legends, trailblazing educators, and Holocaust survivors.

Michael 2010-2011 yearbookThese activities over the course of 4-days will enable Zoe and Michael to learn of the consequences of prejudice and discrimination as well as the price of indifference and inaction in the face of hatred.  TKA’s High School Principal, Sonya Jones stated, “Zoe and Michael are exceptional citizens with compassion and concern for others.  They serve as examples of the school’s objectives to train students who will not merely adjust to society, but will change society and to teach students to relate with non-Christians and with Christians who hold differing views, which coincides with the ADL’s mission.”  Zoe and Michael will also grow to understand their responsibility to educate themselves and others and learn that they possess the power – through their actions and behavior – to become positive agents for change.

The King’s Academy Senior Kimberly Jaar to Attend FAU’s Architecture Summer Institute

Category : Uncategorized

Kimberly JaarThe King’s Academy Senior Kimberly Jaar will be attending Florida Atlantic University’s School of Architecture Summer Institute. The two-week Summer Institute will be held on the FAU Boca Raton Campus in July. Kimberly is one of only 12 students selected to participate in this prestigious program. During her studies, she will produce a variety of work that can be used as part of her portfolio to present to colleges as she is applying this upcoming year. Kimberly will also have the opportunity to display and participate in a final critique of her work.

Kimberly notes that her participation in the Job Shadowing Day at The King’s Academy last year provided her with a focused look at an architectural firm and solidified her choice to pursue architecture as a career. She is excited about FAU’s Summer Institute because “this will be the first hands-on experience” she will have working in her chosen career field. She is looking forward to the individual projects, studio time, and weekly field trips to visit local architects and the Fort Lauderdale campus where FAU’s upper division architecture program is located. Kimberly plans to attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, following graduation from TKA.

Secondary Principal, Sonya Jones, stated, “I am so proud of our TKA students who attend summer enrichment programs. Taking time out of their summer to further their education is a common desire among our students, and this really contributes to their admittance into the top universities and colleges in the United States, as well as abroad. Having these types of opportunities is a testament to the quality of students that attend The King’s Academy and the work ethic that each student possesses.”
